Scaling is the first step first and consists of your dentist gently exposing parts of your teeth that are set in your gum and carefully removing the bacteria buildup. After this is complete, root planing begins. For this procedure, the dentist polishes the root surfaces so plaque and tartar have a harder time settling back there in the future. Thinking of scaling as getting rid of the plaque and tartar while root planing helps prevent them from accumulating in the future.
