We Provide Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria make their way into the gums, causing inflammation and infection. Gingivitis is the most common type of periodontal disease. This typically occurs because of a build-up of plaque and tartar, and while brushing your teeth and flossing certainly help, they are sometimes not enough. Visiting us for checkups and cleanings can help minimize the chances of periodontal disease developing, but in some cases you may need professional periodontal care.
Scaling And Root Planing
Scaling and root planing are two intertwined procedures that remove built up plaque and tartar from underneath your gums. This is an essential component of combating gingivitis and periodontal disease in general. Scaling is the first step first and consists of your dentist gently exposing parts of your teeth that are set in your gum and carefully removing the bacteria buildup. After this is complete, root planing begins. For this procedure, the dentist polishes the root surfaces so plaque and tartar have a harder time settling back there in the future. Thinking of scaling as getting rid of the plaque and tartar while root planing helps prevent them from accumulating in the future. We understand that this may seem intrusive, but we strive to make this service — and all others — as comfortable as possible. With this in mind, if you are anxious please be sure to ask us about our sedation options. Ultimately, we want to provide effective care while keeping you relaxed and at ease the entire time.
