Oral Cancer Screenings Are Essential
When you visit us for a cleaning and checkup, we will also conduct an oral cancer screening. While we are examining the health of your teeth and gums, we check for common symptoms of this condition as well. This is so important because oral cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age or overall health.
The Symptoms We Look For
Your dentist primarily looks for lesions, lumps, sores, and any other abnormalities. They will also ask you if you have noticed any recent changes in your overall health like persistent throat pain, earaches, a change in your voice, sudden weight loss, or any other unexplained issues. It is important for you to keep track of these things and let us know if there are any changes.
If your dentist does notice something out of the ordinary, we will conduct a biopsy. This consists of taking a small tissue sample of the affected area and sending it to a lab for testing. If it happens to be cancer, we will work with you and your general practitioner to come up with a comprehensive course of action to treat it. If the sample comes back negative, we will continue to monitor the area for changes.
